Boasting a history of ski excellence that spans as far back as the 1920's Tignes is one of the world's most well-known ski destinations. As one of the highest resorts in Europe, Tignes has claim to offering just about more year round skiing that anywhere else in the world. This is largely down to a commitment to a vertical of at least 1000m for 8 months of the year and its high altitude skiing on Grande Motte glacier.
Purpose built and close to Val d'Isere, both share the huge l'Espace Killy ski area but Tignes has a more French influence and is situated at higher altitude, which is why it ensures more year-round skiing.
Tignes' main ski area comprises of Le Lac, Le Lavachet and Val Claret. These three areas effectively run into and off of each other and comprise the main ski area standing in a huge bowl above the forest line. There are two other areas located a short distance from these that allow skiers a good variety of both difficulty and view.
On the road to Val d'Isere from Tignes and located further down the mountain are Les Boisses and Les Brévières. These two areas are not ski linked but are still worth venturing to as along the valley floor and nearby are some traditional villages boasting some lovely inviting little cafes.
Thanks to its height Tignes also provides many, many trails for hiking and mountain biking, which become even more popular during the summer season. Also in summer is the option for skiing on the glacier, although this is obviously not confined to the summer months.
While not totally renowned après-ski it is considered very much to be improving in recent years. With over 20 bars and restaurants the area of Le Lac becomes the social hub for Tignes, especially in the summertime. Le Lavachet though has the most all-year atmosphere and Val Claret seems most deserted in summertime other than its ball-sports. Each village in Tignes has its own unique character and Tignes in itself is a popular resort so you will find attractive party scenes in and around the resort during your stay, if that is what you fancy.
With Geneva only two hours' drive from Tignes there is also the option of taking a day out to shop or just see another town. This all means that Tignes is more than deserving of its reputation among skiers as a year-round paradise of a destination.
